We all say “Goodbye” in English, but did you know that it originated from the expression “God be with you”?

Over time, “God be with you” gradually evolved into “Goodbye.”

In earlier times, expressions invoking God were common in everyday speech. Today, even atheists say “Goodbye,” whether they know its original meaning or not.

From a believer’s perspective, there is something interesting about this: even without a religious debate, people continue to use a word historically associated with God.

Words can outlive the beliefs and intentions of the people who speak them.

So, when I say goodbye to you, I offer you this original blessing:

“God be with you!”

— Ben Abraham
