Meditation among other things can help us to reach the think outside the box state.
Firstly its a time consuming process, but it can be faster with practice.
I think we can build a shortcut with conditioning.
From our senses the smelling have the right resolution with tolerable distortion.
You know the feeling when you smell something and it takes you back somewhere in your memories as you were there.
When you first smell a scent, your brain is try to relate an event with it.
So when you smell the same scent again, you are prepared to what is coming because your brain connecting it to previous event.
Its like a bloom filter.
Your brain create a hash for the scent and save it to the database.
When you smell it again then it makes the hash again and lookup the database.
And if it exist then the brain loads the settings like a memory seat in cars.
To set the triggers we need new scents, witch we didn't smelled before.
We can ask somebody to mix a scent for us. So no previous event related to it.
And we have to smell it when we are in the desired state of mind. Not before ,not after.
Also we need a well ventilated place.
We have to repeat it again to harden this link.
Mixing scent samples can be effective, because then the only thing that needed is a glass container for the mixture.
