The Ethnographic Museum is located in the Plaza de las Artes, next to the Russian Museum, it is a nice place to visit and an excellent option, is to make a combo and visit the three places on the same day. It is currently one of the largest ethnographic museums in the world, which is why it is popularly called "The Ethnographic Hermitage Museum."
It was founded in 1901 as a specific ethnography area of the Russian Museum. The eastern wing of the Mikhailovsky Palace housed his collection. In 1923 it opened its doors to the public and in 1934 it became an independent institution.
The main collection, obtained before the revolution, is made up of objects of an ethnographic nature. In 1948 this was completed with items belonging to the Museum of the Peoples of the Soviet Union (Moscow).
The Ethnographic Museum has more than 500,000 works of culture from the people of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and an archive of more than 150,000 photos. Its collections are constantly being completed and are one of a kind for the diversity of topics they cover. It also has an exclusive archive of manuscripts and a large library of ethnographic literature.
The museum's exhibitions are distributed in 24 rooms. In them you can see samples of ceramics, fabrics, ornaments, jewelry, wood and iron items, national costumes and other works of applied arts. You can also see typical constructions from various regions of Russia: yurt, igloo, chum (tent covered with conical skins in Siberia), stone constructions in Caucas, wooden houses typical of Siberia.
In the Special Deposit of the Ethnographic Museum, there are national ornaments, weapons and objects of worship, some of them made of metals and precious stones. These exhibits are unique, since, in most cases, the secrets of their manufacture were lost.
Very close to the Ethnographic Museum is the Musorgsky Theater, located in the Plaza de Artes, in front of the Russian Museum. It is an excellent option if you want to enjoy opera and ballet.
