Hello Hivians, the other day I showed you a special place in Asturias, Somiedo. Today I wanted to do the same with another fantastic place that I visited years ago but this time in its neighbor Cantabria. This is the town of Santillana del Mar. Here is a short tour.
Cantabria keeps many jewels inside that are worth visiting and knowing. One of them is Santillana del Mar, a place that captivates the visitor. In fact, there are quite a few who leave there promising to return.
In the year 970, a monastery was founded that became the collegiate church of Santa Juliana centuries later, in the 12th century. The town of Santillana del Mar grew up around it.
The town continues to preserve the medieval layout of its streets, and it is one of those places that you can really get to know by exploring it on foot, strolling along its cobblestones. Along the way, we will find emblazoned mansions next to beautiful baroque palaces, noble buildings that we can see in the streets of Cantón and del Río or La Carrera.
The Collegiate Church is another must-see, not in vain declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1889. The reliefs on the portico and the impressive cloister deserve special attention, with their columns crowned with capitals in which we can see scenes from the Bible (a typical representation of the time).
We will arrive at the Plaza Mayor through the streets of Santo Domingo and Juan Infante; where it is worth stopping to eat something in the inns and inns that are located in what were former mansions. Without a doubt, tasting the cuisine of the area is one of the best ways to end the tour.
