En la noche de este viernes 3 de marzo, quedó inaugurado el Festival Internacional de Documentales Santiago Álvarez in memoriam en su edición número 20. Este evento en homenaje a este gran documentalista tiene su sede principal en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba.
On the night of Friday, March 3, the 20th edition of the Santiago Alvarez in memoriam International Documentary Film Festival was inaugurated. This event in honor of this great documentary filmmaker has its main venue in the city of Santiago de Cuba.
Es además el único Festival que existe dedicado exclusivamente al documental en todo el país, siendo punto de encuentro de muchos cineastas y documentalistas de América y el mundo. La particularidad de este año, es que es el primero que se realiza físicamente luego del inicio de la pandemia de Covid-19.
It is also the only Festival dedicated exclusively to documentaries in the country, being a meeting point for many filmmakers and documentary filmmakers from America and the world. The particularity of this year is that it is the first one to be held physically after the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
La gala inaugural estuvo amenizada por las presentaciones del Quinteto de Vientos Santiago bajo la direccion del Maestro Carlos Gómez Prieto y del prestigioso coro Orfeon Santiago bajo la dirección de la maestra Sonia Ivette García.
The inaugural gala was enlivened by the performances of the Santiago Wind Quintet under the direction of Maestro Carlos Gómez Prieto and the prestigious choir Orfeon Santiago under the direction of Maestro Sonia Ivette García.
También se entregaron reconocimientos a destacados intelectuales y organizaciones de la ciudad que contribuyeron y contribuyen de una forma u otra al buen desarrollo del Santiago Álvarez.
La edición de este año está dedicada al documental independiente de los Estados Unidos de América. Por lo que para terminar con la inauguración se proyectó el documental Union Maids, realizado en 1976 por Jim Klein, Julia Reichert y Miles Mogulescu, destacados cineastas de ese país.
Una de las sorpresas de la noche fue la presencia de uno de los autores, el señor
Jim Klein, quien antes de la proyección dijo unas palabras en honor a su compañera Julia Reichert que falleció el 1 diciembre del año pasado luego de luchar contra el cáncer algunos años. Enfermedad que no le impidió continuar desarrollando su obra cinematográfica.
Recognition was also given to outstanding intellectuals and organizations of the city that contributed and contribute in one way or another to the good development of the Santiago Álvarez.
This year's edition is dedicated to independent documentaries from the United States of America. To end the inauguration, the documentary Union Maids, made in 1976 by Jim Klein, Julia Reichert and Miles Mogulescu, outstanding filmmakers of that country, was screened.
One of the surprises of the evening was the presence of one of the filmmakers, Mr. Jim Klein, who before the screening said a few words in honor of his partner Julia Reichert, who passed away on December 1st of last year after fighting cancer for several years. This illness did not prevent her from continuing to develop her cinematographic work.
