There’s a popular saying that things are not always as they seem, and there’s nothing that has proven to be more true than that. From the lifestyles of people to business revenue numbers and organizational statistics, if you are not an informed individual in society, you’d barely know the real story behind many things. This is why we’re often told not to judge a book by its cover, and this has fortunately made me to be less trusting of things and people I don’t know beyond the surface level.
From this, we can draw a parallel to the use of technology in a world like ours that keeps advancing. While many brilliant people have gained knowledge on how to develop websites, design responsive pages, and also run effective social media ads, others have chosen to use their intelligence to create things like automated bots to make work easier for both large and small-scale businesses, including busy individuals.
I consider this a huge leap in the AI industry because I first came across automated bots when I was introduced to cryptocurrency as a concept. The bots had commands that you would have to follow to get a desired output, and I used them to do some crypto-related tasks to get whitelisted for airdrops. These days, they’re fully automated to run independently, helping to streamline processes for large organizations and organize the day-to-day activities of people with too many responsibilities.
Unfortunately, there are tech-savvy individuals who have also learned to use these automated bots in a negative way. Take, for example, if you go to Instagram right now, you could see a page with over 15,000 followers, but a closer look might reveal that 80% of those accounts are bots. Fake humans!
Some people also manipulate the algorithm of their accounts by buying streams and likes for their social media posts. Some go as far as creating fake reviews, and we know the end goal is to deceive a gullible target audience, earn their trust, and scam them of their hard-earned money or other resources.
I do find it interesting that there are lots of people who think the creation and use of fake automated bots aren’t a big deal when they are, in fact, hurting those who end up being victims. They lose their money, hate themselves for being gullible and sometimes find it difficult to trust those who are actually genuine. Even those who think they’re too smart and educated sometimes fall for these tricks because the creators of those bots have studied human psychology and mastered the act of appearing completely put together in an unsuspecting way.
Right now, I think there are lawful consequences for people who use various means to scam others. However, I think anyone who is suspected of utilizing automated bots to farm engagement should also have their accounts put under review by the team responsible for each social media platform. If possible, such accounts should be purged after an investigation or a second warning. Individuals should also ensure they do their due diligence before investing in or endorsing any person, business, or social media account because, at the end of the day, that is what we all owe to ourselves.
