At least once in our lifetime, every one of us would think about being an expert in some other field or gaining skills different from the ones that we already have. Most times, it’s not because we feel unfulfilled in our careers. It’s because we have that tingling urge to explore new things and expand our knowledge. Other times, we desire these skills to enable us to earn an extra income or lead in a role that impacts other people directly.
For me, it’s a combination of all of these. I have always thought of learning how to speak to a large group of people, not just for the fun of it or to prove a new extroverted nature, but to be able to use this skill to get into rooms that I would normally not have access to on a casual day. Not only that, public speaking as a skill will give me a good chance of transitioning into another industry later in life, if I ever wish to.
One might ask if there are more reasons this skill appeals to me, and my answer would be yes. Public speaking is that skill that will give me the ability to communicate more effectively with a larger audience. A lot of people think it’s just about speaking, but if a message is not effectively passed, no impact can be created, and that’s exactly what draws me to it. I believe it will give me more credibility in my field, help me steer conversations in the right direction, and also establish good relationships with thought leaders in across industries.
I’m also a shy person, regardless of how much I seem to express myself in words, and if I want to break into non-clinical roles, public speaking sits as a crucial skill that will enable me to operate at the level needed to engage stakeholders. It will also help me build my confidence, and make me more receptive to being around a crowd.
There’s also this deep admiration I have for public speakers, especially young ones, because these days it’s not entirely easy to find people who are very articulate and capable of engaging an audience from the beginning to the end of an event. I want to be a part of those who can do all these. I want to be able to organize my thoughts with more clarity and improve my vocabulary, all of which can be made possible through public speaking.
I consider this skill very important because it has the potential to help me for the rest of my life. Regardless of the timeline or my age, I will be able to use this skill to make an impact in different rooms, and even in my personal relationships. Most importantly, I’ll be able to use my voice to shape the perceptions of any group, when necessary, and who knows, attract clients and anyone who would like to invest in me as a brand.
I know, just like every other skill, this isn’t going to be a walk in the park if I truly want to learn it. That’s why I’m currently building towards a life that sets me ready to take up the challenge when the time comes. And I hope I’ll be able to see it through till the end.
