It is true that sometimes people inspire us without ever intending to. I’ve come across a lot of humans who are simply living by their own standards, but because the world is like a stage where we constantly stand to be viewed by others, everybody’s life becomes visible to an audience.

We get to see the little things that make each other who they are. We get to understand how disciplined people are, their values and every other trait that has led them up the ladder. I’ll say this is how I have drawn inspiration from other people: just by watching and experiencing their influence in my life.

I don’t exactly call anyone my mentor or go forward to seek one, but I’ve found a couple of persons from social media and my immediate environment who inspire me. Even my friends fall into the category, as certain experiences with them inspire me to do beautiful things.

I recall one time when I was in uni, specifically my second year. I met a male acquaintance from campus fellowship who then turned out to become one of my most treasured friends. We were not direct coursemates, but we were in the same faculty, which meant that we had most of our classes together. This helped our bond because it gave us the opportunity to spend time with each other after classes, engage in small talk and even visit each other’s hostels. That was pretty much what our friendship looked like: simple, intentional and genuine.

Fast forward to our first assessment in medical college, where I had realized that my department was way behind in some relevant courses, specifically chemistry-based ones. This friend helped me with my studies, shared learning resources with me and did a revision as well.

I thought it ended there, but he also shared his personal notes with me, one that was, in fact, complete to the end. I refused it at first, but he insisted, and to me, that was the height of selflessness, especially in second year of uni, where everyone was trying to utilize all their resources and even gather more.

I was truly moved by this act of kindness, and I thought, if somebody could do this for me, why can't I do the same for the next person? That experience rewired my mind to see friendship from a different dimension. I began to understand that kind people exist in their numbers and sometimes, they don’t need anything from you to offer a hand.

Through that act, I was inspired to go an extra mile for people I cared about.

Eventually, our assessment was moved to a week later, and I made efforts to use that comprehensive personal note to study with my closest friends in the department, while also checking on him to study with his textbooks and friends as well. Thankfully, we all passed, and my friends were grateful for my help because without that note, we probably would have failed, as our department was still far behind the learning schedule for the courses.

Truly, I remain glad to have been considered that much by someone, and for that friend, I was inspired to do everything within my power to make our friendship work.

For every person reading this, I hope that you always remember that it takes nothing to be kind, and if you receive kindness, ensure not to break the chain because someone would need you too at some point.
