In many family settings, there are always two or three people who share deep similarities with one another compared to the rest of the unit members. Sometimes these similarities could be both physical or behavioral, while other times, the behaviors are learned. But rarely are we conscious of when they creep up on us. I am not an exception, as I have people who I share traits with in my family.
When it comes to looks, I will definitely say my father is the one I am most like, as he is the only person I share a skin colour with, as well as dentition and hair texture. But if I’m asked who I look more like in personality, I would say my sister.
I grew up in a family that had more girls than boys, and in that dynamic, I found one who was visibly the most intelligent, reserved, gentle and, at the same time, a smart mouth. I grew up watching my sister put 101% into everything she set her heart to do. Even though my parents could afford her tuition at the time, she studied hard and won scholarships from her first year, which supported her education and other personal needs.
After graduation, she went further to try her hands at different things in the beauty industry, including makeup and hairstyling, which she is now really good at. On the side, she created content on Steemit and other crypto blogging platforms she was familiar with before settling on Hive. She wasn’t loud about her hard work, but she worked like no one was coming to save her.
That tenacity, growth mindset and strong will to become independent at a young age are things that I already had inside of me, but developed properly by watching my sister achieve greater heights. I too, have always wanted more than an average life for myself. I take every good opportunity to learn new things, improve my skills and double my income because I believe in being self-sufficient. I feel better knowing that the work of my hands can offer me sustenance, and this makes me more like my sister than anyone else.
My sister also seemed to have established few but solid female friendships from a young age, and that was something that I always aspired towards as well. In fact, building friendships with females had always come naturally to me since I was a child, and my experience through teenagehood to adulthood proved that I truly valued community and would put in effort to nurture it, just like my sister does hers.
This lady I refer to as my sister also happens to be one of the most supportive, humorous, vocal and sensible people I have ever come across, and these are some of the qualities my friends attribute to me. So each time I try to think about my relationship with her, I get to realize how much similarity we share, and it does make me happy that she exists in the world with me.
In all of these, it would interest you to know that we share a keen introverted nature. We both love our spaces, enjoy solitude and are particular about the kind of energy we want infiltrating our spaces. We both never care to be the center of attraction; rather, we prefer to be the ones who make meaningful contributions and impact in any room we find ourselves in without necessarily having to make an announcement.
I like to think our personalities didn’t come from thin air. We got at least half of our preferences from our dad. But we have managed to share the most similarities despite consecutive years of being distant, and I think that’s the most beautiful thing about sisterhood: seeing each other as close as yourselves and loving through it all.
