Hello everyone! I bought a new sketchbook and wanted to fill it in with something. Today was laundry day so I chose to draw a washing machine. I know it is such a mundane thing but I think there is beauty in even the simplest things of life. I wanted to draw a front loading washing machine because I don't have it at home. I think it looks cool but may not be so practical as I do laundry quite often and I think it is inconvenient to do 7kgs of load of a family with a front load style as my knees might give out in the middle of it. The one I got at home is top loading machine and it is working great.
I used a black gel pen and started the drawing with the front loading door region because that's the most important part and the proportion of everything else will be based on this. The door turned messy but I guess I can adjust it later.
Here's my washing machine, complete with the buttons and mode settings. I even added a little laundry detergent dispenser. It looked small and cartoony but I was going to add some details to fill in the empty space.
I also drew two more items which are the detergent and a basket. That's actually the detergent that we use at home. That's how it is shaped so it's easy to hold during grocery purchases as it comes with an arm. I don't have that kind of rattan basket but I do have a large round basket on the floor to keep some laundry items.
I added some details to the artwork. I made some lines on the basket so it looks like proper rattan basket. I also drew some clothes in the laundry load since the door is open. It should be visible as it does in real.
I did a brick wall design because there was too much of empty space. I kept it subtle and light with very little pressure while drawing with my pen. I didn't want the design to look noisy and overshadow the main subject which is the washing machine.
Then, I also did some design for the floor to make it look tiled. Specifically I went for a checked design floor. They are usually the non-slip type of tiles. So I thought it will be cool. Again, I kept it as subtle as I could to not overpower the other parts. I did some lines inside the tiles to create the checked pattern in the colours of black and white.
I made some of the outlines darker. I ended up making some changes to the door to make it bigger so it looks more suitable for the machine.
Then, came my favourite part where I used some of my coloured pens to add a splash of colour to the drawing. They were just simple, cheap ball pens in colour I found online. I bought several of them because it was a steal for the price and the quality they possessed. I only used them on a few parts of the artwork like the basket, the laundry clothes and the detergent bottle. That's the colour we get often, though it also matters which type is on sale the day we buy.
This is the final outcome of the drawing. It turned out to be an artwork I had fun creating. I actually wanted to draw this for ages. Maybe even since a year ago and happy that I finally did it. I'm glad my first drawing wasn't so bad in my new sketchbook. I intend to keep it for drawing as it passed my little test today with flying colours without any bleeding of ink on the other pages.
