I guess you can still throw in some texture here and there. So, this is what you'll do. I used to paint like this when I started digital art, but I switch to using a hard edge brush.

The idea is to block in with hard edge brushes, then you used the soft brush or smudge tool, anyone that you prefer, to blend the shapes together.
