My thoughts after reading Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You, 2 years ago.
“To live with dignity, to die with dignity.”
I am still in deep sorrow and still trying to patch my ripped heart, sitting on a couch, phone in hand and tears just running down my cheeks having just finished reading Will and Lou’s utterly tragic story. My best friend has spoiled me the ending when I was just halfway through it. Although I know exactly how it will end, I was still hopeful that it will take a huge turn and go exactly the way I am seeing the ending in my head, it might fall to be the most impossible thing, but still, my hopes are up. But as I was near the end, I started to cry, I started to question things, and I started to think how life is so cruel for the both of them. And when I shut the book, I seriously wanted a tight hug, so tight that maybe, just maybe, can put the shattered pieces of my heart back together.
“What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?” This quote pushed me to read the book and see how it will rip my heart. And it served its purpose; it feels like my heart died with Will. I don’t know how many times I held my breath, cried and felt like a knife is twisting my heart. This book did not just revolve around how love unfolds, but it’s more than that. It’s about soaring greater heights. I just can’t possibly describe what I felt after reading, I don’t know! I just can’t get over it.
“...I told him a story of two people. Two people who shouldn't have met, and who didn't like each other much when they did, but who found they were the only two people in the world who could possibly have understood each other.”
I may sound like a broken record but for the nth time, I’ll say this broke my heart, this made me cry and I am not sure how long it will take me to finally get over this. A lot of life lessons are embedded in this story, which made me love it more. Just the thought of me seeing the love of my life end everything and worse is being part of it, makes me feel like I’m ending mine too. It is horrible to even imagine it, much more putting it in reality.
“How is it you have the right to destroy my life, I wanted to demand of him, but I’m not allowed a say in yours?”
At first, I started asking questions like, “Why did it have to end like that?” “Why is it so unfair for Lou?” but I guess endings aren’t all meant to satisfy readers with happiness, but satisfy readers with how tremendous the story was, how it can possibly move everyone and leave a lot of life lessons. I thought I couldn’t be happy for how the book was ended but somehow, although Lou was the one who have been severely-damaged, it was the perfect ending. And back to the quote that thrown me to this book, “What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?” It will make you wonder how far someone is willing to go to make the person they love happy, and as per Lou, even if it means taking away her heart with him, she risked being broken and miserable all her life just to grant him the end he was hoping for.
As of now, I am still in constant battle with myself whether I should watch the movie or not.. Shall I hurt myself again?
