This topic is very personal to me because Hive really changed me.
Before Hive, my online life was just scrolling. I wake up, I open TikTok, I scroll for 2 hours. I open Instagram, I watch other people living their lives. I open Facebook, I laugh at memes. At the end of the day, I have spent 6 hours online but I have nothing to show for it. No money, no skill, no friends. Just tired eyes and low battery.
I was a consumer. I only dey consume other people content.
Everything changed when my friend introduced me to Hive this year . She said, "You like to write, why you no dey write for Hive?" I said Hive wetin? She showed me her account. I saw people writing their real life stories and getting support. I was shocked.
At first I was scared. Who will read my story? But I tried. My first post was my introduction post.I wrote it with my heart. I got rewarded. I shouted! $ for my own story? That day my online life changed.
Now how has Hive changed my online life?
First, I now create instead of just consuming. Every day I think, what can I share? What did I learn? I no longer waste my data scrolling. I use my data to create. My phone is now my office, not just my distraction.
Second, Hive changed how I use social media. Before, I used to post for likes and validation. Now I post for value. On WhatsApp status I share my Hive link. On Facebook I teach people about Hive. My social media now has purpose.
Third, Hive changed how I connect. I have friends from Ghana, India, Philippines that I have never met, but we comment on each other posts everyday. We are like family. In indiaunited, In Freewrite, in Hive Learners, in SciFi Multiverse , In ladiesofhive and other wonderful communities— I belong somewhere online. I am not lonely again.
Fourth, Hive changed how I spend time online. Before I would stay online till 2am watching TikTok. Now by 10pm I am writing my draft for tomorrow. I am disciplined. Hive taught me that time online can be investment, not just entertainment.
My online life before was empty scrolling. My online life now is creating, connecting, learning and earning. Hive gave my online hours meaning.
