Yo creo que en esta comunidad todas somos mamás leonas y la mayoría queremos lo mejor: el bienestar y la salud emocional para nuestros hijos. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una situación que ha estado pasando en el colegio de mi hija y, sinceramente, no tengo las mejores herramientas para saber afrontarlo. Mi hija tenía dos mejores amigas, o así es como ellas se llamaban, y de un día para otro pasaron de ser tres amigas a ser solo dos; a mi hija la excluyeron, por así decirlo, sin un motivo, sin un problema o sin alguna razón aparente.

I believe that in this community, we’re all lionesses, and most of us want what’s best: our children’s well-being and emotional health. Today I want to share with you a situation that’s been happening at my daughter’s school, and honestly, I don’t have the best tools to know how to handle it. My daughter had two best friends—or so they called themselves—and from one day to the next, they went from being three friends to just two; my daughter was excluded, so to speak, for no reason, without any problem or apparent cause.

De un momento a otro, esas dos niñas cambiaron: dejaron de hacerse llamadas, dejaron de jugar y dejaron de pasar tiempo junto a mi hija. Por supuesto, ella lo notó. Al principio, yo trataba de no darle tanta importancia para que Sophia no se viera afectada; sin embargo, esto llegó al punto de que ella ya no quería ir más a la escuela. Siempre la he entendido, pero evidentemente no puedo permitir que falte a clases.

All of a sudden, those two girls changed: they stopped calling each other, stopped playing, and stopped spending time with my daughter. Of course, she noticed. At first, I tried not to make a big deal out of it so that Sophia wouldn’t be affected; however, it got to the point where she didn’t want to go to school anymore. I’ve always understood her, but obviously I can’t let her skip class.

En casa siempre hemos hablado de la amistad, del respeto y de los valores en general. Siempre he sido clara con ella en todos los aspectos: si la agreden física o mentalmente, o si considera que hay alguna actitud inapropiada, debe decírmelo. La comunicación es lo que más he trabajado en ella y, gracias a Dios, esta vez así fue. Ella me ha contado todo y sé que he criado a una niña muy amable, noble e inocente. Sin embargo, al estar rodeada de un ambiente hogareño tan sano, se le hace difícil lidiar con el entorno escolar, donde no todos son siempre amables ni empáticos.

At home, we’ve always talked about friendship, respect, and values in general. I’ve always been clear with her on every point: if she’s physically or emotionally hurt, or if she thinks someone’s behaving inappropriately, she should tell me. Communication is what I’ve worked on most with her, and thank God, that’s exactly what happened this time. She told me everything, and I know I’ve raised a very kind, noble, and innocent girl. However, because she’s surrounded by such a healthy home environment, she finds it difficult to cope with the school setting, where not everyone is always kind or empathetic.

He buscado hablar con la profesora, pero siento que no he obtenido una solución. Muchas veces le he dicho a mi hija que ni ella ni yo podemos obligar a esas niñas a ser sus amigas, y he hecho mucho énfasis en que hay otros niños que quizás tienen mejores sentimientos y van más acordes a su crianza, a su forma de pensar y a su personalidad.

I’ve tried to talk to the teacher, but I feel like I haven’t found a solution. I’ve told my daughter many times that neither she nor I can force those girls to be her friends, and I’ve really emphasized that there are other children who might be more compatible with her—whose feelings, upbringing, way of thinking, and personality are a better fit for her.

Pero aun así, hablando casi a diario sobre este tema, Sophia no ha logrado soltarlo. Veo la necesidad de empezar a asistir con la orientadora del colegio, además de rodearla de otros ambientes que no sean solo la escuela o las tareas dirigidas. Créanme que en eso estamos, pero no es nada fácil ver a tu hija llorar porque se siente rechazada. No es sencillo querer tener la solución en tus manos y realmente no poder hacer nada, ni anular esa tristeza que siente luego de que un grupo que la aceptaba ahora la rechaza.

But even so, despite talking about this almost every day, Sophia hasn’t been able to let it go. I see the need to start seeing the school counselor, as well as exposing her to environments other than just school or supervised homework sessions. Believe me, we’re working on it, but it’s not easy to see your daughter cry because she feels rejected. It’s not easy to want to have the solution in your hands and yet not be able to do anything—not even take away the sadness she feels now that a group that once accepted her has rejected her.

Todo esto ocurre con niñas de tan solo 8 años, y mi hija, que tiene siete. Es una situación ambigua a la que no le puedo dar solución por sí sola. ¿Ustedes qué harían? Es importante resaltar que Sophia es sumamente sensible e inocente, y me parece difícil tener que enseñarle que en el mundo no todo el mundo es bueno y que esas amigas en las que ella confiaba decidieron cambiar de un día para otro. Sinceramente, no pensé encontrarme con esto a su edad, pero aquí estamos. Espero pronto poder resolverlo. Si alguien ha pasado por esto y puede darme algún consejo, lo agradecería mucho.

All of this is happening to girls as young as 8, and to my daughter, who is 7. It’s a complicated situation that I can’t figure out on my own. What would you do? It’s important to note that Sophia is extremely sensitive and innocent, and I find it hard to have to teach her that not everyone in the world is good and that those friends she trusted decided to change overnight. Honestly, I didn’t expect to face this at her age, but here we are. I hope to resolve it soon. If anyone has been through this and can offer any advice, I’d really appreciate it.
