When Architecture Defines a City.

All cities have things in common. Even the people who pass through them every day. Globalization has made this even more evident, as people of different appearances, races, and even customs fill the world’s cities every day.

Today, I found myself thinking about how lucky I am to be able to take a few days off and visit Porto. The photos I’m sharing below are indeed of Porto, but not from my most recent visit.

There is a different mystique in Porto than what I see and feel in Lisbon, even though the people who walk its streets are similar in almost every way. There is a certain character—imbued by the architecture, the gestures, or the gaze of a stranger or passerby—that resonates deep within the soul, and which cannot be faked or mistaken.

Just as people are different from one another deep down but similar overall, so are cities… And I experience Porto differently than I do Lisbon. It isn’t more beautiful or uglier, nor colder or warmer, dirtier or more organized. They’re just different. And I want to get to know as many of these “accents” as possible, and revisit them whenever I can.
