On one of my frequent walks through Amadora’s city park, just as the golden hour was setting in, I happened to come across a source of inspiration.
A group of children walked past me, making the most of every minute as if it were their last chance to play in their lives.
Just as I had to play with the aperture and exposure to compensate for the backlighting, they, too—the children—danced to the beat of their own hearts, around a river of light that insisted on casting a magnificent presence over everything!
In fact, as we grow up, we stop seeing life this way. We stop seeing moments of happiness and relaxation as true oases in our days and in our lives, and we take it for granted that there will surely be another opportunity “someday” to continue or start over what we were doing....
But, as we all know, things don’t always go the way we want them to. We should seize opportunities when they arise. We shouldn’t be afraid to take a chance to soak up all the freedom and joy that moment can give us, just because of a commitment we absolutely can’t be late for, or because we don’t want to get our clothes dirty—since it would be a hassle to go to work dirty—or because we might fall flat on our hands in the tar...
Children truly bring out the best in us. They are creative, unfiltered, and full of spontaneous joy; and, in an almost comical way, even the most serious among us, in that moment, can see the greatest value that exists in a moment of joy, play, and relaxation.
We should look to children more often. We have so much to learn from them… When we let the adult in us dominate the child who wants to look over the wall, we pay the price with our freedom and our genuine joy.
