There are photos that may seem very similar. They show the same elements and the same backgrounds. But there is a difference between them. We have to pay attention to the small details. Those details are what make one photo, in some way, a little different.
Just as photographs can be similar, some situations in real life can also take on that form. But is that always the case?
They say there are always two sides to every situation. I almost believe that’s the case. However, there are situations that cannot be understood in any way other than rationally.
Today marks the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence Day. This date marks a turning point for a nation that, in 1991, declared its separation from an oppressive nation.
The country has spent nearly 12 years of its independent existence fighting for its sovereignty. There is no other way to put it. Russia believes it has the right to reclaim the territory and to erase the memory and will of an entire nation.
All in the name of a leader’s dream—a leader who believes his will must prevail, regardless of all the suffering it has caused, causes, and continues to cause… on both sides.
There is no other way to say or understand it. The narrative of a nation that surrendered to a Nazi government is no longer even understood, believed, or even valued domestically. It is no longer widely challenged, because anyone who challenges that narrative is quickly pushed out of the spotlight, and their voice is somehow silenced.
There is only one way out for all of us who believe in the fundamental values of each country’s national sovereignty: that we unite and continue to impose sanctions on Russian oligarchs without fail. They, indeed, have the gift of being able to speak directly to the Kremlin, and even if their voices are not heard by their fellow citizens, they can make a difference.
The strategy of war has changed. Against all initial expectations, Ukraine has held its ground on the front lines—in a historic and, in some ways, intelligent manner. This is a war not only of numbers, but of the resilience and courage of a people—a people who, even today, long to live and celebrate this day freely and to the fullest.
