Good evening, friends!
Welcome to another post in the Street Art community!
Today I want to share with you a very emblematic and meaningful mural. Although this work was not created by just one pair of hands, it is the result of the collaboration of several people/young people/artists and decorates the walls that flank the beautiful fountain at the Miradouro das Fontaínhas. Located in the riverside area of Porto, this viewpoint has one of the most beautiful views over the city and Vila Nova de Gaia. Situated in the parish of Bonfim, this viewpoint is one of the oldest and most typical in the city. It faces the River Douro and practically kisses the Infante Bridge.
Because it's St John's Day
Today is a day of celebration
I'm going to launch a balloon
and I have the tradition
of making the waterfall
with a Saint in my hand
This mural was born out of a project (founded in September 1975) that brought together a number of residents whose main demand was to be given more decent, safe housing, something that had not yet been seen in the old tapada neighbourhood (source). The demographic pressure to which the city of Porto, like Lisbon, is subjected, adds another risk factor to the others identified, and there is a clear shortage of housing in this area which, although not one of the noblest, is certainly one of the ex libris of the view over the magnificent River Douro!
