But in the beginning they are separated and maybe that will always be a hidden pain?

No. There is a proper time to separate the bird chick from their parents to make them imprinted on humans. The breeders know this. If the imprinting is done correctly, then the birds will see the humans as their parents, then later (when they become sexually mature) as their mates. They do not see their literal parents as their own parents. Not even as their own species. They are bonded with humans for life. They do not need a huge territory either. You can see many happy owls with people. There are many happy Harris's hawks too. Some people even travel with them on public transport. This is possible with properly socialised, tame birds.
