Sometimes we do things because of our ignorance. The beautiful of my career (I study engineering) is you learn to see the world differently, you use to looking for the whys and how things happen. So I believe people use to press the elevator button because like you don't know how it works you believe can happen anything, believe the elevator can go faster or something like this.
