In South Africa, we have the “Voortrekkers”, which is basically the same as the scouts, only Afrikaans. I am one of the leaders and have a Grade 6 group, who has absolutely fulfilled my life. We go camping during school holidays, always plan fun outdoor activities and the kids learn amazing new skills and have great adventures, instead of spending the holidays behind their phone screens!
Every year we celebrate Easter by having a march from the local school to the church. This year we decided to build a cross to carry along the way as well.
As we were walking, carrying the “burden” of the cross, the sun was setting, people driving by were honking and waving, making the event very special for the kids.
When we got to the church, we had a service and a few fun activities for them, after which they played till dark and was able to say goodbye to their friends after an exhausting term, before our school holidays started.
It’s moments like these why my daily life is filled with kids, seeing the difference we are making in their lives and how in turn, it fulfils mine!
