I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.
This week is all about St. Patrick's Day. I know, today is the Ides of March, and that could have featured as well, but celebrated St. Patrick is a little more fun than celebrating the world's most well known assassination.
First up this week, When Irish Eyes are Smiling!
When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, 'tis like the morn in spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a popular Irish folk song that was written by Ernest Ball, with lyrics by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr. This version is sung by Chauncey Olcott.
I Found a Four Leaf Clover reflects the carefree spirit of the 1920s. The lyrics tell the story of a person who finds a four-leaf clover and believes it will bring them good luck.
I found a four-leaf clover,
I picked it from the ground,
And every time I hold it tight,
I feel the luck go round.
This version does not have lyrics. Selvin's Dance Orchestra was primarily a dance band and rarely used a vocalist.
Reminiscences of Ireland, Part 1 is one side of two, with the second being Reminiscences of Ireland, Part 2. I'm only sharing part 1 here.
"Reminiscences of Ireland" is a medley of traditional Irish tunes arranged and performed by Sodero's Band. The piece features several well-known Irish tunes, including "The Irish Washerwoman," "The Kerry Dance," "St. Patrick's Day in the Morning," and "Garryowen."
