It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.
I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.
Last week I shared part 1 of a 2 part song, Force of Destiny, with the promise that part 2 would be this week. The wait is over, and here it is.
Force of Destiny, often also translated as The Power of Fate, or La forza del destino in it's original Italian, was an opera written by Verdi. The opera details the story of two lovers who are torn apart by social status, familial expectations, war and, eventually, brought back together again by fate only to be tragically ripped apart by one last act of hate and anger.
This version of Force of Destiny is performed by the Victor Talking Machine Company's house band, The Victor Symphony Orchestra.
Also, last week, I had shared a song from an old German Homokord label named Morgenrot. 
Muss I denn, roughly translated as Must I, Then, is an old German folk tale about a young journeyman who must leave home to make his way, fortune, and future in another village or city. He regrets leaving the love of his life behind, but promises to remain true to her until he can return to marry her.
There are many similar, traditional, songs world wide that share the same sentiment. The Irish Danny Boy has a similar feel (though Danny does not necessary return home) and the more recent American Over There can be said to be in the same family.
Muss I Denn is performed by the Nebe Quartet, in German.
My final song of the week shares a very different vibe from the first two. Whilst Force of Destiny and Muss I Denn lament lost love, House Rent Blues is a song about social injustice of a woman being kicked out of her home for not having money to pay the rent.
Bessie Smith, the singer of House Rent Blues, was truly a pioneer in her time. This song was recorded in 1924, right when blues and jazz were really beginning to become largely popular with the American population. Bessie married not long before she hit it big time and very quickly became much more wealthy than her new husband. In the 1920's that was very unheard of, and her husband was quite jealous. She toured a lot (in a custom train car) and while she was away, both she and her husband had a number of affairs; in Bessie's case, many of her affairs were with other women.
Being well ahead of her time, many of Bessie's songs were about social and racial injustice; not only was she a pioneer in the sense that she was practically openly bisexual in the 1920's, but she was ahead of her time in her sense of singing songs of protest nationally.
She signed with Columbia and recorded a lot of her songs with them. The records that I have are not in good shape and very scratchy and staticky. Honestly, though, that seems to only emphasize the emotion of the song, of the helplessness of the woman about to be cast out.
