I have not been around Hive much of late. Those who know me are aware that when this happens it's due to life getting in the way and needing attention. These past few weeks have been no different.
My oldest son suffers depression.
My middle son suffers depression.
My youngest son has Aspergers (and also had his tonsils removed last week, from which he has been recovering).
(I'm sure they all inherited from me - I owe them)
When any of them ask me to go spend some time with them the answer is always of course, unless I absolutely cannot, at which point I explain why. They have been asking a lot lately, so that is where I have been. All my Hiving and all my personal projects have simply been placed on hold. That's really the end of the story, and it isn't worth much of a post.
Until today. Today was an auspicious day.
Today is my mother's 70th birthday. Happy Birthday mom! She's out in Alberta visiting my sister, sister's children, and sister's grandchildren. 70 is a good age. It's a fine reminder of mortality.
Today I was diagnosed with Covid. Yay for me. Thankfully the symptoms are so far mild; sore throat and so, so very tired. OMG. I cannot believe how tired I have been. Faceplanting on the keyboard is almost a possibility.
That said, mom is still alive. I'm still alive. I'm still laughing, but not today.
Today I received word that a friend's son lost his two year battle with depression and took his own way out.
There isn't much more to say than that. It's devastating. I have no words. I would say that I can't imagine, but the scary thing is, I can imagine. I have imagined it. I assure you, it's not pleasant. I'm beyond thankful I don't believe I will ever live through it.
So yeah, I'm sick and my mom is in another country on the other side of the continent. I cannot give my boys a hug right now but they're planning an online gaming session with me. They're good human beings, and I'm very proud of them.
Take some good advice from @galenkp; tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Go give everyone you need to a hug right now. Smile at a neighbour. Hold the grocery store door open for the person behind. Hell, pay for the person behind you at drive thru. It might make a world of difference to the random stranger you've just made happy.
