For painting with pastels I have originally worked with regular watercolor paper (not so great) and quickly proceeded to Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper (phantastic but VERY expensive). So I started looking for an alternative, and I found it:
There is ONE gesso available that has the perfect tooth for pastel paintings on any surface that will take a gesso. It is Liquitex Clear Gesso (caution: Liquitex makes other gessos, too, which are NOT suitable for pastel). I don't know if you can get this in Russia, but give it a try, it's worth it! This is an American product, but it's made in France for shipping in Europe.
The big advantage besides the perfect tooth is its clarity. You can use just about any tinted paper as long as it's heavy enough to take the moisture of the gesso. Paint it on, let it dry, and you have a perfect pastel paper. It also works phantastic with color pencils and, of course, pastel pencils.
This gesso is acrylic, but it will take all manner of other media to combine with pastel work. Even watercolor can be used for underpainting without spidering. This is a huge problem with Pastelmat: watercolor looks great on it, but lines and contours spider out, which looks like shit. Liquitex Clear Gesso doesn't exhibit this problem.
Another neat trick for underpaintings is, you can mix this gesso with gouache, or acrylics, or tint it with watercolor. This gives you essentially an acrylic paint with tooth. So you can make your own tinted paper from white, or make an entire underpainting with many colors. The tinted gesso will dry waterproof.
Also, you can make detailed underpaintings with water media, seal them with a clear acrylic against smearing, and add this gesso over it for tooth and finish with pastels.
The possibilities are endless. I will make a detailed post with examples soon, but I'm sure you get the idea. Here in Germany, not quite one liter (946 ml) costs about 20 EUR plus shipping. You can coat MANY pieces of paper with that amount; it only takes one coat. So this makes IMHO the best and cheapest pastel paper you can find.
