France's famous military engineer, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, constructed the fortified city on the banks of the river Saar based on plans by Thomas de Choisy, the city's first governor. Back then the city was named Sarre-Louis and was meant to defend the French Eastern frontier of the newly acquired Lorraine province, which was given to France with the Treaties of Peace of Nijmegen.
From the air the original military character of Saarlouis is plainly visible even today, e.g. the casemates, some barracks, the Great Market with the Commander's Office and Vauban island, a former ravelin.
Saarlouis used to be famous for its neighboring steel and iron ore production and its nearby mining facilities. While we're up in the air, we'll also have a look at the Duhamel mine, once the most productive coal mine in Europe, and its gigantic spoil tip with the impressive Saar Polygon monument.
