Cool Times! Dreemers Explore My Entry For The Dreemport Challenge
We all agreed to meet at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon for our first adventure. An Ice Cave Tour in Vatnajokull Glacier.
This was an incredible experience! We saw massive icebergs in the lake. We were told that they were very old, and that some contain volcanic ash.
Then we were picked up in a Super Jeep by our guide, Paul. He drove us to Vatnajokull National Park. We hiked to the ice cave which is further in the park. It was about a half hour walk, but it was very easy. The path was smooth and well paved with gravel. Papilloncharity said the walk was fun and didn't bother his knee, so you know it isn't a difficult hike.
The hike itself was an experience. We were finally out in the wilderness. It was beautiful! Soon we arrived at Breidamerkurjokull, a tongue of Europe’s largest glacier, the Vatnajokull.
When we arrived, Paul had us put on safety gear. Kaerpediem was a little worried, but our professional and experienced guide reassured her. And she was as delighted as the rest of us when she went inside! The ice was so blue. And we must have spent like 45 minutes in there, just exploring and taking pictures and videos. Then it was time for the beautiful trip back.
When we arrived back at the lagoon, we decided to have lunch. There was a wonderful little place that served great local food. You can see their menu here .
We stayed at the hotel - it turns out both are located on a family farm!
We booked two rooms, and had plenty of space.
The next morning we ate a big breakfast, then set out for a boat tour of the lake. It was awesome, we got really close to the glacier itself!
We then went to walk upon the black sand of the Diamond Beach. And yes, the sand really was black!
There were icebergs washed up, one was incredibly blue! We climbed it, and from the top we witnessed an age old struggle for survival.
Out amongst the ice, a seal was navigating towards a relatively low and flat piece of ice. Suddenly we saw three fins.
"Orcas!" shouted samsmith1971 excitedly.
Then we saw what they had in mind. They tried to get the seal before it could reach safety, but it was too close. It quickly jumped to safety. The huge animals bumped into the ice several times, in hopes of knocking their potential prey into the water. But the seal was determined, and kept its balance.
samsmith1971 got the whole thing on video, and papilloncharity took some world class pictures. No doubt all of the Bees on Hive will be buzzing over this! Kaerpediem and I just stood there with huge eyes, watching the drama play out. We all felt incredibly privileged to have witnessed this. In fact we had been told that predators don't hunt in the protected waters, so it was extra magical.
We went back to the hotel, and made our posts. This moment begged to be shared immediately. Then we had another delicious supper. Did I tell you that whenever possible the food is grown locally?
After another night of peace and quiet, we were ready for another adventure. We went back to Vatnajokull National Park. This time it was to watch for birds and other wildlife, and take some more time to enjoy the scenery.
We spent most of the day just exploring at our own pace. It was both relaxing and exciting.
When it started to get dark, we decided to stay a while longer. It was clear. Soon there was a faiint green color in the sky. We tried to figure out if it was just a cloud, or the famous Aurora Borealis. In reply it arched through the night sky, with rippling waves of green, pink, magenta, and yellow. It came directly overhead at one point, and seemed to form a sort of bowl over us. Like the show was ours alone.
We went back to the hotel, tired but happy. We talked about what we wanted to do for our last day there. We all agreed that we had to see Reykjavik before leaving the area.
The next morning, bright and early, we left on our adventure. The city was beautiful.
We only wished there was more time to explore. There were so many interesting sights!
The museum was fascinating, and we spent a good portion of our time talking to an elderly man we met after we left, because we recognized his traditional attire. He was a local who had more tales than the Brothers Grimm.
