So I have finalized a trip I have wanted to do for many years now, visit Chernobyl and Pripyat.
I am sure some people will think I am mad but there are few places you can visit today that show how nature reclaims man made structures over decades of time when man evacuates and does not return.
The opportunity came about when time came to do a trip back to the UK from New Zealand to see family. My wife stupidly asked if there was somewhere I would like to visit. She is normally the planner and initially regretted asking the question :) She has come around to the idea now and is also looking forward to the trip.
When the disaster initially happened back in 1986 the people in the surrounding area were given 2 hours to leave. Nobody has lived there since. People do visit the 30Km exclusion zone that still stands to this day and you need a guide, the risks are still high in some areas. But on the whole you are only subjected to low levels of radiation during a visit into the zone, not enough to cause any real damage.
So countdown to November begins, I will detail my experience after the trip.
