We all have heard of the term 'Royal Purple', which comes from a time when purple dye was difficult and expensive to source/make. In our own history, when we talk about Royal Purple in this sense we're generally speaking about Tyrian purple, which was sourced from a specific sea snail and the secret process of producing it was subsequently lost in about 1453... and then only rediscovered in 1998 (though a synthetic dye was found by accident in 1856 that was similar).
