The young voters are shaking up the political landscape, with at the forefront, cryptocurrencies. In the run-up to the 2024 US presidential elections, a new force has gained momentum that can tip the balance-, the crypto-savvy Millennials and Gen Z.
These digital natives have grown up in an age of technological innovation, and thus they question traditional financial systems. They seek not just change, but disruption and cryptocurrencies exemplify disruption.
Why?
Because now, these young voters make up a fair slice of the electorate. Their voices are growing louder, and politicians start listening.
It's not just the money.
For so many young Americans, crypto is a metaphoric shot toward financial freedom from old-school constraints. They do believe in it as a means of evening out the playing field and making opportunities crop up where none existed prior. This passion for the crypto industry does not recognize political party lines. You have young Democrats, Republicans, and independents behind blockchain technology. It's one of the few topics that unite rather than divide.
In battleground states like Georgia, Arizona, and Michigan, the crypto vote could make all the difference. All of these were states won by razor-thin margins in 2020, and the number of crypto supporters in some of those places now dwarfs those winning margins.
Take Georgia, for example. That state saw a huge increase in youth voter turnout from 2016 through 2020. Now, there are three times as many "Stand with Crypto" advocates in Georgia as the number of votes that decided the state last time around.
That is what one might call a game-changer.
Compared to that, the tale of Arizona and Michigan reads very similarly.
In 2020, young voters did come out in droves, and a lot of young voters are super-vested in crypto policies. As those voters get more engaged and informed, their potential impact on election outcomes is profound.
But what is feeding this crypto craze among young voters?
A lot of them feel left behind by the present financial system. High fees, rising costs, and a feeling that the deck is stacked against them. So many reasons why many young Americans have been looking for other options.
Cryptocurrencies afford a view into a different future: one of decentralized financial power, where innovation is not staved off but welcomed. To any generation brought up with a smartphone and social media, the idea of a digital, borderless currency makes sense.
Crypto to young voters symbolizes much more than a financial tool, it embodies the kind of systemic change they want to see throughout society. They do not simply vote for crypto-friendly policies, they are voting for a vision of the future.
This shift in priorities of the voters is what is now compelling politicians to take cognizance. Candidates of major parties are already fast starting to fold crypto into their platforms as they realize their ticket power to a key demographic.
The implications of this trend extend beyond just the upcoming election.
As these young, crypto-enthusiastic voters become a larger share of the electorate, their influence on policy will only continue to grow. We could be seeing the opening battles of a sea change in how America does financial regulation and innovation.
Of course, crypto doesn't always go to plan when in the hands of politicians.
There are still plenty of skeptics and security concerns, and also environmental impact, are major considerations. But one can't deny the momentum.
My point is, any candidate who can speak effectively concerning influential interests of young voters in crypto and financial innovation will have an advantage.
