Okay, so it’s Spidey’s turn to enter the marvel universe. We see Spiderman at the end of civil war in the battle between the opposing forces of iron man and Captain America.
It was the first time we get to see Spiderman, and what an entrance, for me it felt like it energised the movie, I have to hold my hands up, my two favourite characters in the marvel universe are Spiderman and Wolverine, they always fascinated me, I think because they both represented the outsider in tat universe, Logan an older more embittered man and Peter Parker, a kid trying his best to find his place in the world.
And that’s how the film develops, Peter starts off on a high, battling and being involved in one of the biggest events of the marvel universe, the battle between Tony Stark’s establishment based obeyance of the establishment and Steve Rogers rejection of the restriction of the Sokovia Accord and all that entails for the safety of super powered humans.
I particularly like the way Peter uses modern devices to record what’s going on during this part of the film and seeing the lead up to the battle from his point of view, with time enough for a selfie in the midst of battle.
The film takes an interesting turn when Peter goes home and the adults don’t really have time for him anymore, they move on to whatever they have to and leave Peter hanging, but ever the optimistic teenage optimist he keeps up the idea that he will be called into battle. Waiting for a phone call that never comes. We see him help out catching a bike thief, giving directions, and still waiting for that phone call.
The plot hots up when he encounters some street thugs who are trying to rob an ATM,
We get to see a more developed Spiderman, but someone having fun with his powers, not realising that he could die at the hands of these guys.
He eventually gets set off on a course that will eventually lead to the Vulture,
And the shocker,
What I liked about the plot was that while we are dealing with the whole Marvel Universe it seemed to be grounded in Peter being your local neighbourhood superhero, it felt really grounded but in a really nice way.
The cast is amazing,
Tom Holland is amazing in this part, he is a kid, but he is also Spiderman, he plays the part really well. Watch this space, he is going to be huge.
Robert Downey Jr,, nuff said, living legend and would watch him in paint drying, charisma personified.
Thought Marisa Tomei was great, a real departure from the usual “Aunt Mays”
Jacob Batolon was great as the side kick friend.
Michael Keaton was the vulture and I will talk more about him later.
Donald Glover had a part to play in this movie as well, I love this guy, he was phenomenal in Community and he wrote and directed Atlanta, this is one seriously talented man, and for me added immeasurably to the film and its overall coolness factor.
This is a great film, I went to see this with my good friend Steve and he made a great point, he really hoped that Sony wouldn’t somehow get the rights back to this film as Marvel utterly nailed what a Spiderman film was.
There were so many funny skits in this film, I loved the awkward Student TV skits and the even funnier Captain America informationals that the students had to watch.
It reminded me of the 70s safety films I watched as kid, there is also a great scene towards the end, it was funny on so many levels.
That was the thing about this film, it worked on so many levels as a kid’s film it sends out a great message about growing up and learning patience and trying to do the right thing. As a teenager, it was just the right amount of social embarrassment, but never so much that you had to watch behind your hands.
What I really loved about this film was the lense I watched it through as an adult, Michael Keaton is stunning as the Vulture, he reminded me of Henry Hill in Goodfellas,
A blue-collar guy that was put in a bad position trying to look after his family, doing things that seemed at the time was purely a beneficial act to look out for those around him, but then spins out of control. I honestly cannot get over how much I loved Keaton, he humanised the whole concept of the villain, and by humanising the villain made him even more ruthless and terrifying, he was great in new Robocop and phenomenal in Birdman, and I hope he stays around in the next Spidey movie.
There is a real and profound menace to Keaton's character that you don't usually get in these films, there is nothing cartoony about his motivation or reactions, this is a genuinely dangerous man who will do anything to protect what he has built up and heaven help anyone trying to take that away from him.
I often leave the cinema these days thinking, umm that felt like a missed opportunity, some script inconsistency, some effect that I didn’t like, some attempt to cash in on what felt like a loved genre that now lies in tatters. I left this film with a massive goofy grin on my face.
I loved the dynamic between Peter and his friend Ned.
I really loved the father son dynamic between Peter and Tony Stark.
Thankfully they skimmed over the origin of Spiderman, I think superhero films can be really bad for going over the origin again and again. I get it, he was bitten by a radioactive spider, can we move on now, and they didn’t do that they just got on with the story.
There was a brilliant sequence where Spidey is chasing a van, but he is in the suburbs, they nailed it again how he had to run and jump, you’ll know what I mean when you see it.
The introduction on the AI suit and the interplay between Peter and the suit adds a whole new element of fun to the film.
For me though, the standout performance in the film was Michael Keaton’s the vulture, he was as menacing as any of Scorsese’s wiseguys, this was a character that could compartmentalise being married and providing for his family and ruthlessly threatening to kill Peter Parker and “everyone he loves”, for me that lifted the movie to a higher plain than I would normally believe possible, and gave the film a harder edge that I really hope gets explored further later on.
