People once thought these were a temporary sun that appeared next to the big sun. They thought it followed the sun around, "dogging it" by following at a distance.
Nothing quite so dramatic, even though they can appear to be very real solar companions. The bright spots are refractions of sunlight in upper atmospheric ice crystals and will always be 23 degrees directly east or west of the sun from your viewpoint. A few kilometers away, they may not even be seen. Seeing two at once is rare, but a real visual treat.
