This image has a similar look as Stranger Things, when Eleven goes into her mind to see other people...Or even before that the movie Under the Skin starring Scarlett Johansson (2013).
I do recall being enamored by the the striking visuals in that movie. It wasn't intentionally inspired by either Stranger Things or Under the Skin, but the subconscious is a fascinating thing and it must file away little bits of inspiration without me always being aware of it.
Upon thinking about this image more I see how that fits nicely within its meaning . Symbolically the moon represents many different things, some of them more well known that others. The moon can represent the space between conscious and unconscious. Like that moment where you are only half asleep. Which must be where at least some of my inspiration likes to hang out. The moon can also be representative of inner reflection...note the dark reflective water. In astrology the moon represents your emotional world, water is symbolically connected to emotional states as well.
Because I am often shooting with book covers in mind, I rely on symbolism often to portray larger ideas. Books themselves in story telling are also often rich in symbolism to get larger themes across. While I intentionally work it into my work, I find more often I am fitting pieces together without intentional planning. Intuition plays a large role in my creative process...Intuition is also symbolically connected to the moon.
So I have become aware since creating this image how the image itself and my process of creation have come full circle. Like a cycle of creation and interpretation. Also connecting to the symbolic nature of the moons cycles.
