The Bantayan Island Trip That Proved Simple Destinations Create the Deepest Memories
Have you heard of Bantayan Island? Or Madridejos? Well, Madridejos is a municipality in Bantayan Island, and this island has consistently gained popularity in the past few years until now because of its unique beaches that stretch along the whole island, fine white sand, and rich marine biodiversity. It has a big coastal view, fresh sea breeze, and vibrant sea horizons and scenes where locals and tourists enjoy their time. Inside the Madridejos municipality is a barangay called Barangay Maalat. The word Maalat means “salty” in direct English, and it is called that because it is located on the coast where the sea water is salty. More of the history can be read about this town. Inside Barangay Maalat is a famous boardwalk, Maalat Baywalk, which we visited last year with my family when we celebrated my grandfather’s death anniversary.
For everyone’s information, Maalat Baywalk is just a simple baywalk in Madridejos, but there is something charming about it. It is simple, but as a public space that carries millions of memories of tourists and passersby, this place is a significant keepsake for everyone who values it. People walk along the shore, sit and relax with the breeze, enjoy their food with their loved ones, and spend personal time with themselves while enjoying the moment and the rolling sound of the sea waves. The Maalat Baywalk sign is so vibrant that whoever passes by gets their eyes caught by it.
In context, the baywalk was established as part of the LGU’s improvement initiative to grow the coast of Madridejos and provide a safe and free enjoyable area along the shore that promotes and values the beauty of Madridejos. It is developed simply, but how it stands now and how people value it give more relevance and identity to the place, showing that it carries more beauty than anyone can see at first visit.
Over time, this baywalk has become a popular landmark in Barangay Maalat and a favorite recreational spot of the locals there, which unexpectedly became our favorite too during our stay. Sunset is so enjoyable and perfect in Maalat Baywalk, and aside from San Remigio Lapyahan Coast, this baywalk also sets a high standard for sunset viewing. Not only did we experience the sunset here, but also the coastal life of the people that you can witness from this baywalk, just like one straight out of a movie. While you sit in one of its corners, fishermen and busy people on the coast become your main view. You’ll experience a very authentic and raw picture of Madridejos life through these people.
What I like about this town is how its roads are bordered with green trees, proof that Madridejos is still living a laid-back life even amidst modernization. The town still values nature, and it is a relaxing testament of respect for what they richly have. I really enjoyed passing by their streets because most of them feel welcoming during the trips.
Aside from Maalat Baywalk, we also had a quick visit to the Mangrove Tunnel and the famous “Ruins” of Bantayan Island. In a nutshell, the Mangrove Tunnel in Bantayan Island is an eco-tourism destination where tourists pass through narrow waterways lined with thick mangrove trees before reaching the end spot. There are local guides who explain what the place promotes as well as help with navigation. And also, the Ruins, which is a famous landmark among visitors of Bantayan Island, is a ruin in a cliff-like coastal spot that is entrance-free and visited by people because of its iconic walls that offer a perfect view of the coast. The Ruins is not actually the formal name of the place because it is not an official destination, but people and tourists made it popular even without formal tourism promotion.
That trip to Madridejos reminded me again that travel does not always need to be grand to be meaningful. Sometimes, the most memorable places are the simple ones. These are the kinds of places that do not just become destinations, but become part of our story. And for me, Madridejos and Bantayan Island will always be one of those chapters and a proof that a life well-spent is built from moments well-lived.
