I think the excessive focus on "achievement" in mainstream education can have a quite destructive effect on children, leading them to lose touch with their own natural sense of curiosity. It's amazing how much you can learn when learning is fun! And it's amazing how little you learn when you're being spoon fed something you're pretty certain is useless, while it is also boring.
