“After leaving my regular job years ago, I felt like I deserved to drift for awhile. I was burned out with stress and my anxiety was out of control again. I didn’t have to get up at a set time and felt free. Everyone needs some time to themselves, to recharge, right? It felt good, for a while. Then the depression set in. I wasn't socializing as much and didn’t feel like I had much of a purpose. This had happened in the past and I couldn't believe I let it get out of control again. Overdoing it with the beer on weekends didn't help either. I did less and less of the things I liked to do. My energy level went down and everything made me tired. I felt rudderless“
“The tendency to procrastinate when anxious complicated things. I put off looking for that next job and promised I would do something later. The problem with thinking like this is that later never comes. It became harder and harder to take action. My wallet and spirit suffered.“
Humans need to be busy and part of something, to contribute. This doesn't have to be a paid job but can be in the form of:
- Volunteering
- Helping friends and family
- Having a hobby
- Sharing a faith with a community
If these things are lacking, life begins to feel meaningless and dull. This combined with a lack of social contact and acceptance is the worst.
“After a while I decided to volunteer again and it helped a great deal. Even if it was only for one day in the beginning. Getting up at a set time in the morning, walking the dog and setting worthwhile goals for the day, such as participating in Steemit, also helped me deal with these feelings of worthlessness. Doing these little things daily makes my life so much more meaningful. Ironically, the more I do the more energy I get. Life seems to give me the energy I need after I take action, not before."
