Throughout the month of January, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
On 29 January 1856, Queen Victoria established the Victoria Cross (VC), one of the highest awards that a British or Commonwealth serviceperson can receive.
It is given to those who have shown extreme bravery in the presence of the enemy during warfare.
With the current Queen Platinum Jubilee fast approaching, Feb 6th, itss impossible to imagine modern Britain without the influence of Queen Victoria and the era of incredible progress and innovation to which she lends her name. Queen Victoria, up until the current Queen surpassed her reign length (very recently), was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch
She reigned for some 63 years, from 1837 till her death in 1901.
While you would think gold coins of well ocer 100yrs of age would set you back a small fortune. They can still be found regularly and at reasonable prices.
The Full Gold Sovereign weighs in at 7.98 grams but is minted in 22ct, 916.7 gold, the coin is 22.05mm in diameter and 1.52mm thick. This goves it a total gold content of 7.315g of pure gold.
Using todays price charts:
7.315 X 43.02 = £ £314.69 of gold.
While prices on Ebay are a good indicator of current prices, sellers are always hit with "sellers premiums", so my best advicenwould be to just simply go to your local coin dealer, auction house or Jewellery store and ask to buy them there. You may even find you can pick them up at literally just over spot price as you can save the seller time and effort if you ask nicely.
