Emily Brontë - Wuthering Heights: a silver collectors edition.
Throughout the month of December, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
England lost one of its most beloved writers on 19 December 1848 when Emily Brontë, author of Wuthering Heights, died at the age of just 30. Her brother Branwell had been gravely ill, eventually dying of tuberculosis, a disease which Emily began to show signs of at his funeral. She initially refused medical treatment, but was quickly overcome by the illness that would also take her sister Anne’s life six months later.
Her sister Charlotte spread word of her sister’s death in a letter a few days later, writing that ‘there is no Emily in time or on Earth now’. Whilst Emily was lost, her novel Wuthering Heights remains a British classic
In 2018, the Guernsey mint released a sterling silver, £5 coin to commemorate the 200th anniversary since her birth. Technically not "legal tender" in the UK, it still carries a £5 denomination and the portrain of Queen Elizabeth II.
Measuring 38.61mm in diameter, and weighing in at 28.28g of 0.925 silver, this coins can still be found at a reasonable price on the second hand market. At today price of £0.544 per gram, these coins contain £14.23 of pure silver.
While i find the £70 sold price to be a luttle expensive, these commemorative coins do regularly sell for around this price. Thenperson lucky enough to pick one up for just £25 really did pick up a bargain.
