Death to the dollar!!??!! Is de-dollarisation back on the table....
For nearly a century, the US dollar has held the coveted position of the world's reserve currency. This status empowered central banks to conduct international transactions and settle debts using the almighty dollar. However, a subtle undercurrent is suggesting a phenomenon known as "de-dollarisation" .... A concerted effort by various nations to explore alternative currencies for international transactions has emergedin recent years.
The potential ripple effects of de-dollarisation are profound, impacting the global economy, the balance of international power, and the daily lives of people worldwide. It's imperative to scrutinise whether this economic shift is indeed occurring, and if so, at what pace and driven by what motivations??
UNDERSTANDING THE PAST TO PREDICT THE FUTURE
In 1931, the US dollar dethroned the Great British pound as the world's preferred reserve currency, a change precipitated by the upheavals of the Great Depression of the 20's. The aftermath of both World Wars further solidified the dollar's dominance as the US supplied allies with weaponry, paid for in GOLD. The Bretton Woods agreement in 1944 officially anointed the US dollar as the world's reserve currency.
Fast forward to 1971-1973, and the Bretton Woods system crumbled due to President Richard Nixon's decision to temporarily suspend the dollar's convertibility back into gold. However, de-dollarisation did not materialise as anticipated, thanks to the perceived stability of the dollar and the US's hard and soft power.
SHIFTING TIDES: NOT A MATTER OF "IF" BUT "WHEN"....
Economists now speculate that de-dollarisation might unfold as emerging economies in the Global South seek to diversify their reserve currencies. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) noted a decline in the US dollar's share of global reserves in 2021, signaling a potential turning point.
Countries have economic, political, and strategic motivations to distance themselves from the dollar. The desire for a multipolar world order, rather than the existing unipolarity led by the US, is one driving force. Additionally, some nations, strained by poor relations with the US, seek to avoid the geopolitical weaponisation of the dollar, exemplified by US sanctions on RUSSIA.
While signs of de-dollarisation are evident, a sudden abandonment of the dollar as the global reserve currency is unlikely without a seismic shift in geopolitics.
THE UNCERTAIN FATE OF THE DOLLAR
The jury is still out, but the prevailing sentiment is mixed!! Despite ongoing attempts to replace it with an alternative reserve currency, many believe the US dollar will likely retain its dominance. However, for how much longer this will be the case remains anyone's guess, and the future of global reserve currencies is at a fascinating crossroads.
