Throughout the month of January, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
In January of 1936, England received a new King in Edward VIII, however, his reign was short-lived. After less than a year of leadership, Edward chose to abdicate in a shocking and controversial decision, in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.
The decision shook the nation, and led to Edward’s younger brother the Duke of York ascending to the throne as King George VI shortly after. Edward and Simpson left England and travelled around Europe for several years, and the couple were not invited back to attend a royal ceremony until 1967.
Due to his short reign, many of the coins that were due to be released in to circulation never got released. This.meant that any coins that made itnout of the mint are now worth a small fortune.
