2020 is shaping up to be a great year for silver coin releases from the Royal Mint. I've already covered some of the designs the mint has released, and today I'd like to take a closer look at the "new", 2020, Silver Proof Britannia.
Britannia stands facing into the wind, a trident planted into the rocks, and her gaze focused on the horizon.
Britannia first appeared on coins nearly 2,000 years ago as a symbol of a province newly brought under the control of Rome. The noble warrior that graced the coins of Hadrian is the source of inspiration for a modern icon that embodies the spirit of a nation today.
Britannia re-emerged in the Elizabethan era but only returned to coins in 1672 during the reign of Charles II.
From that time to the present day Britannia has featured on the coins of every British monarch. Artists of each era have depicted Britannia, on coins and elsewhere, in ways that reflect the ideas and style of their time.

The 2020 Britannia has been created by artist James Tottle. His design is both respectful of the past and a contemporary interpretation, and in my opinion one of the best designs the mint has done for a long time.
The £55 price tag is a little bit pricey for a 1oz silver coin, but these proof coins do hold their values and when comparing it to the 2020, bullion silver coin, I think the Proof design is so much nicer.
What do you think about this proof version?
