not really -- both alcohol and tabacco usually were only used for religious ceremonies .. and they knew very well about the side affects so it was not allowed for daily use .. but old people in many cultures were an exception because they were either sick and full of pain or tired and could not work any longer and to make their lives and suffering easier they let them use alcohol and drugs .. not so much different from the many pills in our carehomes today just that they treated their old ones a lot better and admired them and their wisdom
