Different Types of Studios:
Physical Studio:
A physical studio is a studio with an actual facility and equipment. The infrastructure is a major studio selling point, and due to the physical location and the overhead from it, physical studios charge a significantly higher percentage. Around the 50% ballpark. Physical studios sometimes take remote models as well as studio models.
Digital Studio:
Digital studios completely take place online and have no physical location. Because of this, digital studios are much more turnkey and require less of a price tag to get started. Due to not having physical location constrictions, these studios can also support models all over the place, and aren’t restricted by having a limited amount of rooms available.
How Much Does It Cost To Start A Studio?
This all greatly depends. In theory, a digital studio can be started with zero upfront costs. All you need is a social security number or EIN. But we all know that a successful studio will require investment. The actual investment required varies drastically, especially when contrasting physical studios vs digital studios. A physical studio will have all the overhead associated with the facility and equipment, to where as a digital studio will not have those expenses. Legal expenses (model contracts, making sure you’re 2257 Compliant, TOS, Content Policy, Privacy Policy, ect) will be a couple thousand dollars, at least. There’s also going to be marketing expenses, business filing fees and more.
What's Required To Get Started:
Studio Accounts
Creating a studio account is as simple as signing up for the various sites (we’ve got them listed further down) as a studio. You’ll need to provide a digital copy of ID and all the tax information (EIN, SSN, VAT, ect). Once your studio account(s) are approved, you’ll be able to start registering models.
Equipment / Facility
This is for physical studios, and not as much of a concern for digital studios. If you’re running a physical studio, you’ll need the actual location as well as everything needed to operate: Computers, webcams, rooms setup, makeup and hair stations, high-speed internet, toys and anything else required.
Legal Requirements
There’s some legal things you’ll want to take care of: It’s suggested to file a company, have a lawyer draft up a model agreement and due your due-dilligence on 2257 Compliance. If you’re running a website, it’s recommended to have a lawyer draft a TOS, Privacy Policy and other terms and conditions.
Models / Performers
And last but not least, you’ll need the performers.
How Studios Generate Money:
Live Camming
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance a camming studio is what you want to start. Live webcam shows are very popular and very profitable, and studios can get in on the action. Simply create a studio account and register the camming models under the studio.
Clip Sales
Clip sales is another way for studios to profit. There’s some clip sites that support studio accounts where the models are registered under the studio. There’s others that support producer accounts that can still be used by the studio. The studio will just have to manually figure out the model’s cut.

Consultation / Training
The consultation and training is a major selling point for all studios. Getting started as a model can be very intimidating and there’s a lot to know about. Especially with all the different services (camming, clips, ect), the legal and tax bit, promotion and everything else. Providing quality consultation and training is a must for every studio.
Promotion / Marketing
Traffic is a major part of the industry. If your studio has website traffic, social media followings, is buying traffic or has whitelabeled traffic, that’s a major selling point! In addition to providing traffic for models, studios are also able to assist performers in setting up their own social media accounts and other web properties.
DMCA Services
Piracy is a major issue in the adult industry and DMCA services is a huge selling point. There’s two options here: You can either manage the DMCA services in-house and send out notice on the model’s behalf, or you can partner with a DMCA Agency. Many offer bulk rates for studio operators.
More Payout Options
Some sites don’t have the best payout options or payout schedule. Many studios capitalize on this by offering their models more cashout options and some even offer daily payouts! Studios get paid out directly from the site and pay out the models in their cashout method of choice.
