What is IT Social and Professional Issues and why is it important?

These issues are arguably the most relevant to our society now, or better yet, to the entire world. We are in the age of digital everything, from online entertainment to digital currency. With that in mind, it should be evident that issues revolving around the activities that most people use daily should be considered a top priority. Moreover, these issues touch upon all three aspects of a society: ethics, law, and culture or religion. Topics such as hacking could significantly differ in righteousness and principle in each aspect, where hacking could be seen as a breach of privacy in an ethical way of speaking, as illegal (or sometimes legal) in the eyes of the law, and unnatural in a cultural perspective. Another example of an argumentative issue is plagiarism. Ethically speaking, plagiarizing another's work would insult the original author. According to a post from Quezon City University (Social and Professional Issues SPI101), there are 10 Commandments of Computer Ethics that one must follow in order to an individual, especially a computer scientist, to conform to the societal standards of technology.

These commandments are:
  1. Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people.
  2. Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work.
  3. Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files.
  4. Thou shalt not use a computer to steal.
  5. Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness.
  6. Thou shalt not use or copy software for which you have not paid.
  7. Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization.
  8. Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output.
  9. Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write.
  10. Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect.

All that is to say, the contemporary digital landscape presents us with complex issues that reverberate across ethical, legal, and cultural dimensions. By embracing these principles, we can foster a digital society that thrives on innovation while upholding the values that form the bedrock of our global community.
