Day 4 Recap: Great escapes for Federer, Pliskova
Just when the 2017 US Open was about to spin off its axis, Roger Federer and Karolina Pliskova saved it. A string of upsets in 24 hours saw off the No. 4, No. 7 and No. 8 seeds on the men’s side and the No. 5 seed on the women’s, and Thursday in Arthur Ashe Stadium, both tournament favorites were down and in serious danger of joining them on the next plane out of Queens.

But first, Pliskova pulled out a come-from-behind, three-set victory over qualifier Nicole Gibbs, and then, Federer ran his record against Mikhail Youzhny to 17-0, rebounding from a two-sets-to-one deficit to claim his second consecutive five-set win.



Nadal shakes off slow start, accelerates past Daniel
Taro Daniel, ranked 121 in the world, took No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal to four sets in the second round on Thursday. But Nadal prevailed, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, to continue his quest for a 16th major title.
