억만 장자 스탠리 드러켄밀러(Stanley Druckenmiller)와 연방준비위원회(Federal Reserve Chair)의 케빈 와쉬(Kevin Warsh)는 투자자들을 모집해 1억3300만달러(1420억원)를 조성, 베이시스(Basis)를 설립해 가상화폐 개발에 나섰다.
베이시스의 개발자들은 변동성이 가상화폐가 주류가 되지 못하는 이유라며, 미국 달러 또는 소비자 물가 지수와 같은 지표에 연결되는 디지털 코인을 만들겠다는 것이다. 가격이 요동치는 비트코인이 아닌 안정적인 통화를 만들겠다는 의지로 분석된다.
한편, 비트코인 헤지펀드 매니저 댄 모어헤드 판테라 CEO가 지금이 비트코인 시장에 다시 진입할 적기라고 말했다. 비트코인의 바닥은 6500달러이며, 연말 2만달러까지 갈 것이라는 것이 그의 주장이다. 모어헤드는 "금리가 200일 이동 평균 이하로 떨어지는 것은 거의 없다. 그렇게 되면, 구입하기에 매우 좋은 시기"라고 설명했다.

A billionaire hedge-fund manager and the Fed chair runner-up are investing in a new cryptocurrency
Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller and Federal Reserve chair runner-up Kevin Warsh have invested in a cryptocurrency project called Basis, along with many other investors, the company said Wednesday.
Bain Capital Ventures said it led the $133 million private placement, which was the private equity firm's first purchase of cryptocurrency tokens. Other investors included Alphabet's GV venture capital arm and Andreessen Horowitz.
Formerly known as Basecoin, Basis is developing a cryptocurrency whose supply is controlled by an algorithm rather than a central bank. In contrast, bitcoin and most major cryptocurrencies have a fixed supply. Changes in demand can then send prices in wild swings.
Basis' developers say such volatility has prevented mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies and they want to create a digital coin whose availability is tied to a measure such as the U.S. dollar or consumer price index.
Bitcoin is flashing a rare buy signal, crypto hedge fund manager says
The worst could be over for bitcoin, according to one of the best-known cryptocurrency hedge fund managers.
Dan Morehead, CEO of Pantera Capital, said the digital currency has been growing at 165 percent per year in the five years the firm has been in business.
"Something that's growing that fast hardly ever gets below its 200-day moving average," Morehead told CNBC's "Fast Money" Wednesday. "When it does, it's a very good time to buy."
Morehead, whose firm returned 25,000 percent the year bitcoin hit its all-time high, said $6,500 was the bottom for this bear market. The cryptocurrency neared that level in April, falling as low as $6,620, according to CoinDesk. Bitcoin recovered to a near $8,212 Wednesday, and has lost more than 40 percent of its value this year.
Amazon wins patent for data feed marketplace that could include bitcoin transactions
Amazon Technologies has won a patent for a marketplace that offers data feeds, including bitcoin transactions.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday approved the Amazon.com subsidiary's September 2014 filing for a patent that can correlate different data streams and sell the combined feed as a subscription to people who want to track that data. The filing referenced bitcoin transactions twice as examples of possible products.
In the first case, the filing described "a data stream that publishes or includes global bitcoin transactions (or any crypto currency transaction)."
암호화폐 거래기록도 상품이 될까…아마존 데이터 거래 특허 획득
미국 거대 온라인 쇼핑몰 아마존이 스트리밍 데이터를 사고 팔 수 있는 시장 특허를 획득했다. 상품 중에는 실시간 암호화폐 거래 기록도 포함돼 있다.
17일 코인데스크 등에 따르면 아마존의 전자 상거래를 담당하는 자회사인 아마존테크놀로지는 스트리밍 데이터를 실시간으로 할 수 있도록 하는 마켓 특허를 획득했다고 밝혔다.
아마존 테크놀로지의 특허는 개인이나 기관이 여러 종류의 데이터를 판매상품으로 등록하고, 소비자는 이를 구매해 구독할 수 있는 플랫폼 역할을 하는 기술이다. 사고팔 수 있는 스트리밍 데이터의 종류는 특정의 웹사이트 클릭수 현황 또는 마케팅과 재무 정보, 서비스 운영 기록, 제조 설비 운영 기록 등이다. 주목할 만한 점은 아마존 테크놀로지는 이 마켓에서 사고 팔수 있는 데이터의 예시 가운데 암호화폐 거래 데이터도 포함시켰다는 점이다.
아마존 테크놀로지는 다만 단순한 암호화폐 거래 기록 데이터는 상품으로 가치가 없다고 보고 이를 다른 정보와 결합해서 올리는 방식을 제시했다. 특허 출원 서류가 내놓은 예시는 이렇다. 만약 소비자가 인터넷 쇼핑을 할 때 비트코인으로 결제를 했다면, 판매자는 구매자의 비트코인 주소를 알 수 있는 것은 물론 실제 물건을 받는 배송주소도 알고 있다. 이 두 데이터를 결합해 데이터 시장에 올려놓으면 누군가 구매할 수 있다는 것이다. 아마존 테크놀로지는 사법당국이 고객이 될 수 있다고 예측했다. 범죄가 의심되는 비트코인 주소가 있다면 이 비트코인 주소와 연계된 물건 배송 기록과 실제 주소 데이터를 받아 분석해낼 수 있기 때문이다.
암호화폐 거래기록도 상품이 될까…아마존 데이터 거래 특허 획득
주목할만한 점은 이 특허가 4년 전 출원됐다는 것이다. 아마존은 이 특허를 지난 2014년 9월 29일 제안했고 심사를 거쳐 이날 승인됐다. 온라인 시장을 평정하고 있는 아마존이 암호화폐가 온라인 지불 수단 가운데 하나로 사용될 수 있다는 점을 일찌감치 예측한 셈이다.
한편 온라인 전자 결제 업체인 페이팔은 지난 3월 블록체인 관련 결제 시스템 특허를 신청했다. 거래 당사자 간 코인을 전송하는 것이 아닌 프라이빗 키를 교환하는 방식의 거래시스템이다. 이외에도 미국 최대 투자은행인 뱅크오브아메리카·암호화폐 거래소 창립자 윙클보스 형제 등이 디지털 거래 보안을 위한 특허를 획득했다.
