I had the same experience watching the Steem I bought on the way down lose a ton of Satoshis, and was thinking of just buying BTC with my Steem, but recently decided against it. Steem has at lest the ability to double in price very fast in the coming months with the possibility of several bullish announcements like the completion of SMT's as well public slowly trickling back in as the market recovers to discover the culture of New Steem!

Here is what solidified my decision to not sell!
