Chasing Dragons

Time slips in scattered rhythm and moonbeams tripping on the stairs.
A frozen night is backlit
By earth dwellers masking
Deeper cares,
While all drift silent in a winter wood of tall and slender pine
And rutted roads lead endless paths that twist as
Ancient creeping vine
Yet still we play like gaming kings,
Building kingdoms of our own.
A master hand once duly lauded, now forgotten and defrauded
Bourne of losses, fully grown.

Off we go, so oddly shapen,
Though true hearts move
Through our midst.
Our feet tread o'er dry land
While our hearts we clench as fists
And every vanquished dragon
once fire hotly blew.
Our fleshly hearts beat faster
Than foes who plunder jewels.
