Beyond Convenience: The Freedom and Opportunities Technology Has Unlocked | LOH #249

This week's challenge question by @joanstewart is fantastic and really gets us thinking about the role technology plays in our lives:

2️⃣ Building a strong foundation in technical skills can be a game-changer in life. What are your thoughts on how technology may open doors to new opportunities not offered previously? Are you utilizing new technology where you live? How have you implemented technology into your daily skills?

This is such a great topic, as technology has truly transformed so many aspects of our daily lives here in the Philippines and around the world. It’s been a game-changer for me in so many ways, from how I work to how I get around.

One of the biggest ways technology has been a game-changer for me is in communication. This became especially clear during the pandemic. While many of us had to stay indoors, we were still able to talk with our friends and loved ones through video calls, even if they were miles away. It truly helped us stay connected when we couldn't be together. For example, I was able to help my cousin from Canada to navigate a website while we were on a video call, even if she's very far away. Also, my family and I are always updating each other in our group chat.

Beyond that, technology has opened up so many new doors for work. I’ve seen countless small businesses thrive on social media, reaching customers they never could have before. It also made working from home possible for so many people, including me 💖

Thanks to technology, I've had the opportunity to work in various home-based jobs like a virtual assistant, graphic designer, website designer, and ESL teacher. The perks of working from home are amazing: I get to work in comfort, spend more time with my family, and even join them when they travel or eat out, which wouldn’t have been possible with a traditional on-site job.

I've implemented technology into my daily routine in so many practical ways. The most obvious is with online shopping, which I now prefer because it’s so convenient. Like this cute pet backpack I purchased online for my cat:

Getting from one place to another has also become so much easier. Before, I had to memorize all the jeepney and bus routes just to get around. This is how complicated commuting here in Metro Manila, Philippines:

But now, with ride-hailing apps, I can get picked up by a motorcycle or taxi and dropped off exactly at my destination, point-to-point. It's a huge time-saver and so much more convenient. I don't need to worry getting lost wherever I go.

Ordering food has also become a simple, one-click process. When we have unexpected visitors, special occasions, or just feel like having a special meal, it’s incredibly easy to order food using a delivery app.

And when it comes to paying bills, I no longer have to commute to a payment center. I just utilize digital banks to pay our bills instantly. This has saved us so much money on transportation fees and, best of all, helps us avoid late payment penalties.

For me, technology hasn't just been a convenience; it's been an enabler. It's given me a new kind of freedom and flexibility in my work and personal life that wasn't available before.
