Nigeria participated in the Atlanta, United States, Summer Olympics in 1996. The most unexpected victory was Nigeria's football gold medal. To win the gold, the squad beat opposition that is typically regarded as stronger, including Brazil and ultimately Argentina.
At that time, things were good and going smoothly, the economy was not bad at all, even though I was relatively younger. At that time, we could still trade with coins, such as the 5 Kobo, 10 kobo, 20 kobo, 50 kobo, and 1 Naira coin, as well as other items like food and things that are now pricier.
The success of our men's Olympic football game was largely attributed to the peace and harmony that prevailed in the nation. We had many excellent players back then, however some of them are no longer with us, while others are still playing today.
Due to various issues with how our governments are handling development and athletics, it is really challenging for us to even be where the rest of the world anticipates we should be at this time. They lack the ability to appreciate talent, particularly in football.
How could a continent the size of Africa be so weak that a nation like Zambia could still find methods to avoid us? Even though we are currently prey to Ghana, all African nations used to be wary of Nigeria when it came to playing football, since they all knew it wouldn't be simple for them to defeat us. It truly amazes me that I have to begin posing questions like this.
Are there no players that can help our country win these championships? Later, I understood that we had better players who can perform not just as well as in the past but also fill in some significant gaps. Victor Oshime, Iheanacho, and other players from the new generation are talented; therefore I sincerely hope they can make us smile.
Few of our football players are physically fit, which has a negative impact on how they perform on the pitch. The funniest thing is that the only equipment available to keep players in shape is the same stuff that older players used in their day. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's the truth.I eagerly anticipate changes in every one of the aforementioned areas.
I eagerly anticipate that similar historical occurrences will occur once more now.
I have previously felt that our governments are not doing their jobs when it comes to the issue of taking good care of our players. Some of them are not always happy to play and it is because of the ways they are not being treated well. I have also seen many of our former players online who have come to my attention as not living well at all. If we are sincere about wanting to win the trophy once more, Nigeria needs to make a lot of changes.The governments definitely need to address this issue since the reputations established by individuals of the past are being destroyed by this new generation's lack of patience.
